It was a predictable epilogue, and the cost of coasting

In these days of three Wild Cards, conventional wisdom basically says all you have to do is get in, use your best two or three reliable starting pitchers for this short playoff round, and get hot at the right time. Conventional wisdom also says that anything can happen in the postseason, but the Sox liked their chances, particularly due to the strength of their top three starters. This was a rotation built to handle a three-game sprint, which was consistently mentioned in predictions prior to the series. (This was true even when the edge was actually given to the Yankees; MLB's positional breakdown is one example .)
In fact, speculating about who would pitch the crucial Games 1 and 2 in the Wild Card Series became a main focus in September as fans, the manager, and the team turned their attention to the playoffs. With a postseason berth assured and no real chance to take over the division, the Red Sox paced themselves by resting their starters and other players, to ensure they were ready.
Tracy said about Willson Contreras, ""DH'ing yesterday [instead of playing first base] was strictly to manage the load."
