Breland’s 110-1 record looks more impressive than Leonard’s reported 145-5. What those totals cannot show is how each fighter would respond when winning required more than the skills that brought him Olympic gold.
Breland won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and became a two-time WBA welterweight champion. That was a successful professional career. Leonard, the 1976 Olympic light welterweight champion, won professional world titles in five divisions. His victories over Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler established his greatness against opponents who demanded different answers.
