What went wrong for the 2026 Philadelphia Phillies? And where do they go from here?

The magical ride in 2022 — the breakthrough for a core that, improbably, remains — sustained all the way until Game 6 of the World Series, when the Houston Astros won it all against the Phillies on Nov. 5. In 2023, the Arizona Diamondbacks shocked the Phillies in NLCS Game 7 on Oct. 24. In 2024, the rival New York Mets sent the Phillies home in the NLDS on Oct. 9. Another exit in the same round followed on that same date against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2025.

This year, it was the Atlanta Braves' turn to terminate the latest Phillies run , this time in the wild-card series on Oct. 1 .

Five years, five different opponents, familiar lingering images after the final out. It's Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, the co-faces of the franchise whose big swings weren't quite enough. It's J.T. Realmuto, the catching anchor whose presence is felt on both sides of the ball but whose decline has been tough to ignore. It's the trio formerly known as "The Daycare" — Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh — who supplied a refreshing, youthful element at the outset of this era but are now nearing free agency unfulfilled. It's Trea Turner, who arrived fresh off the Phillies' World Series appearance as the All-Star shortstop who would push Philadelphia over the top but whose production has fluctuated wildly. It's Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez, who have taken the ball over and over in the biggest games, only to end up retreating to the clubhouse in defeat.
