This morning, we'll talk about something fun. The NHL season started this week — go Caps — and with the season just a few days old, we've got something that only happens every couple of seasons . A goalie goal!
There weren't any goalie goals last season. Oddly enough, there were three the season before — Ilya Sorokin, Alex Nedeljkovic, and Filip Gustavsson. According to Wikipedia, that was the first time there had ever been more than one in an NHL season. To give a sense of how uncommon they are, there have only been 21 goalie goals in the history of the NHL. There have been multiple 5+ season stretches without one being scored. Martin Brodeur scored three in his career. Ron Hextall scored two.
With all that in mind, what other sporting feats are as rare and unlikely as the NHL goalie goal? The first thing that came to mind is a no-hitter in baseball. It's not quite there in terms of rarity — there have been 327 recorded in MLB history — but the combination of difficulty and rarity feels about right. What say y'all?
