With the team down in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against the Yankees and Sonny Gray on the mound, Tracy pulled his AL Cy Young contender and it immediately backfired.
But unlike Game 1's decision to take Payton Tolle out of a tight contest, Wednesday night's move was arguably worse.
Gray had only thrown 70 pitches through 4.2 innings when the Red Sox skipper came out of the dugout. Down 1-0, the right-hander had just given up a single to Ben Rice , putting runners on the corners with two outs. Tracy went to left-hander Erik Miller to handle the left-handed Cody Bellinger .
