Fifty years later, his professional career offers the most surprising outcome from that celebrated American team: all four of his fellow gold medalists won major world titles. Davis never did.
The United States collected five gold medals, one silver and one bronze in Montreal. The team eventually produced five professional world champions, including three heavyweight champions, but those achievements conceal very different careers. Some fighters built years of success. Others reached the top and lost their titles in their first defense.
Davis challenged Jim Watt and Edwin Rosario for the WBC lightweight title before facing Buddy McGirt for the IBF light welterweight belt. He lost all three attempts, finishing 36-6-1. His split-decision defeat against Rosario in 1984 was the closest he came to joining his Olympic teammates as a champion.
