The Padres took a 1-0 series lead over the Cubs with a dominant 8-0 win on Tuesday.
Yahoo Sports · October 1, 2026
Padres starter Michael King flirted with a no-hitter to open the series, finally allowing his first and only hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning on a single from Cubs 2B Nico Hoerner . Outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. shined on offense with a three-run effort, including a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
That leaves the Cubs in need of a win Wednesday to keep their season alive. They'll send out RHP Kevin Gausman (9-12, 4.51 ERA) for his first postseason start with the club following a midseason trade from the Toronto Blue Jays . The Padres will start RHP Nick Pivetta (3-2, 2.86 ERA) on the mound.
