The early slate was a busy one, as the Buffalo Bills overcame a five-turnover showing to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers , 24-16. The Jacksonville Jaguars continued to expose Drake Maye and the New England Patriots , who fell to 1-2 as Jacksonville pulled away with a dominant 35-6 win at home. Maye had two interceptions and two fumbles (one lost) as he continues to struggle this season, including one pick nabbed by two-way star Travis Hunter — the first of his career.

Among the biggest surprises of the day was an upset win by the Washington Commanders , as Marcus Mariota started in place of the injured Jayden Daniels (elbow) to pull past the defending Super Bowl champs , 33-31. Mariota played a clean game, tossing for 183 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, while Darnold threw for 379 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, including two that went to reigning Offensive Player of the Year Jaxson Smith-Njigba. That marks six receiving touchdowns for Smith-Njigba through the first three weeks of the season, including three straight games of 120-plus receiving yards.
