New York Jets: Jamaal Pritchett Gets His Shot

They show up every year at NFL camps, hoping for just one shot. One shot to show they belong in a league that has already decided they are unworthy of even a seventh round draft pick. They are the undrafted free agents, and for most of them, playing in an NFL game is just a dream.

The NFL is a tough business to break into. There are only so many roster spots available, and most are taken by draft picks. Most teams realistically have maybe three or four spots up for grab going into training camp, though injuries can open up a few more. Most years a team will bring in ten to fifteen undrafted free agents to compete in training camp, each hoping to defy the odds and secure a spot on an NFL roster. Most are destined to fail, laboring away in obscurity, ending up on practice squads, in other leagues, or out of professional football altogether. For a select few, talent, work ethic and opportunity intersect and an opening presents itself. When it does, the fortunate UDFA must seize the opportunity and immediately impress, or he is likely to have a short run in the NFL.

On Sunday an opportunity opens for the Jets' Jamaal Pritchett. A Jets UDFA originally signed in 2025, Pritchett was signed to the Jets 53 man roster on Saturday after a rash of injuries left the Jets shorthanded at wide receiver.
