The Washington Nationals officially avoid a last place finish

One thing that made it even sweeter is the fact that it will be the Mets who finish last. Despite being a bit of a meme, the Mets actually do not tend to bottom out. This is actually their first last place finish since 2003. Given their massive payroll, that is quite a disastrous outcome. The Nats made that outcome a reality last night.

It felt important to get that one win and stay out of last. With how the team played for most of this season, it would have been cruel to be in the basement at season's end. Outside of a brutal 6 week stretch that basically doomed the season, this team has played inspired baseball.

The game last night was quite the whacky one. Andrew Alvarez has pitched so well this season, but he did not have it in this one. His command was all over the place from the jump. A combination of uncompetitive misses and pitches in the middle of the zone doomed the southpaw.
