Back in October, Gane poked Aspinall in the eye during their fight at UFC 321 resulting in the champion needing multiple eye surgeries. And after a further injury while preparing for his comeback, the Brit was forced to vacate his title .

This means that Gane – who claimed interim gold by knocking out Alex Pereira in June – was expected to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. It continues a long run of bad luck atop the heavyweight division ever since Francis Ngannou left in 2022.
