Sullivan Wins Disputed Title From Dominick McCaffrey By Boxing News 24 Desk - 08/29/2026 - Comments John L. Sullivan defeated Dominick McCaffrey on August 29, 1885, in a fight now recognized as the first world heavyweight championship contested under Marquess of Queensberry rules.
