Who was the biggest surprise of the preseason for the 49ers?

Kyle Shanahan said he likes when players make it easy on him. Jacob Cowing did that with an 80+ yard punt return in the second preseason game. De'Zhaun Stribling's roster spot was never in doubt, but he made an impact in both games.

Defensively, Jack Jones had the ball production the 49ers so desperately covet at cornerback. He gave Raheem Morris confidence during the preseason.

It's always fun to read what people-watching practice is saying and then see for yourself how the players perform. In a practice setting, it's easy to get caught up in one flashy play and ignore what happens on a down-to-down basis. That brings me to my answer. I have two: one pleasant surprise, and one…not so much.
