Yankees Sequence of the Week: David Bednar (8/21)

We join Bednar with two outs in the ninth inning last Friday against the Blue Jays. It's a nail-biter of a game with the offense still sputtering, made all the more tense by Brandon Valenzuela's double to lead off the frame. That brings Brett Bateman to the plate as the tying run, the pesky center fielder already 3-for-5 with a double and a triple.

Bateman collected two of his three hits against fastballs up in the zone, so Bednar tries to exploit that strength by throwing a splitter that looks like a strike out of the hand, relying on the downward movement to extract a chase from the hitter.

This pitch is a little too far away from the zone to get the chase that Bednar was after. Even though it's a ball in the dirt, it isn't a complete waste pitch. A ball like this can serve to set up pitches later in the AB, as we will see in a short time.
