“I’m not interested in him! He’s not a popular fighter! He won’t give me anything! I only need the title! Then WBC vs. WBO! That means Janibek vs. Canelo!” Janibek posted on X today.
The comment is dismissive, but it explains why mandatory systems exist. Janibek lacks the popularity to get a voluntary title opportunity, yet his accomplishments make him more qualified than the opponents Sheeraz has faced since moving to 168 pounds. Sheeraz and Queensberry have not committed to accepting the defense ordered by the WBO. The champion has instead attacked the organization for giving Janibek a title opportunity after his positive test for meldonium.
That complaint cannot conceal the competitive danger involved. Janibek is a former unified middleweight champion and the most accomplished available contender in the WBO’s top 15. Canelo is occupied with Christian Mbilli, while Diego Pacheco is pursuing another title. The WBO had few credible alternatives.
